10:30 AM: Welcome to the 2018 Austin Pet Expo!

11:00 AM: C&E Companion Animal - Pet Oral Health

Why does your dog have bad breath?  Why does it keep coming back again and again?  Can I take natural steps to maintain health in the oral cavity?  In my presentation, we will answer these questions as well as discuss more advanced processes such as gingivitis, periodontitis and how oral health impacts systemic health.  We will also look at how modern human dentistry is influencing, as well as being influenced, by pets and their parents!

11:30 AM: The Petfinder.com™ Adoptable Parade of Rescue Pets

Try not to squeal with delight as our various rescue groups parade around the stage with some of their select pets in need of forever homes! Rescue group representatives will also be available to provide information on adopting a new pet companion. Please remember, adopt don’t shop!

12:00 PM: Reptiles, Amphibians and Creepy Crawly Critters 101

Michael Foux, Owner, Austin Reptile Shows

Snakes and Skinks! Lizards and Geckos! Turtles and Toads! These incredible creatures continue to grow in popularity with pet owners everywhere. Sadly, many prospective pet parents have no idea what they are getting into, leaving millions of animals misunderstood and mistreated right from the start. Learning about the natural history, safe handling, and proper captive care of these beautiful creatures is the key to ensuring that our reptile friends thrive as they should.

12:30 PM: What do a 300 lb bear, 80 lb dog and a 5-year-old royal pig have in common?”

JoAnn Wagner, Author, Sir Pigglesworth Publication

'What do a 300 lb bear, 80 lbs dog and a 5-year-old royal pig have in common?   Come find out from JoAnn Wagner, award-winning author of the Sir Pigglesworth Adventure series!  They are stars of 'Sir Pigglesworth's Adventures in Pigeon Forge' and a product of my active imagination. Come enjoy a reading from the book and a question and answer time with JoAnn. Bring along your questions and your kiddos...they are sure to be enthralled by my little pink friend.'

1:00 PM:  Pet Musical Chairs Competition

Musical Chairs is a doggy variation of the classic children’s game. Music plays as handlers walk with their dog’s off-leash counter-clockwise around a circle of chairs. When the music stops, the handlers instruct their dogs to sit by verbal request and hand signal only (i.e., without touching them) and rush to sit on a vacant chair in the circle. Last dog (and person) sitting wins!

1:30 PM: “Ask the Vet- Benefits of Essential Oils”

Doctor Janet Roark, Veterinarian, doTERRA

Tired of all the natural options out there, not knowing what to get or how to use them? Want some solutions to health concerns that actually work without resorting to medications for your day to day concerns? Does your pet get anxious easily? Dr. Janet Roark will answer these questions and more as she discusses the Safe and Effective use of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential oils in your home and with your pets. Ask questions of the Essential Oil Vet herself and be empowered to decrease the amount of toxic chemicals your pets are exposed to on a daily basis!

Erica Falbaum, Founder, Pet Education Project

Did you know that nearly 8 million animals enter US animal shelters or rescues each year? So many of us animal lovers dream of getting involved in animal rescue, but in addition we need to consider preventing shelter surrenders in the first place. Teaching our children (and each other) about proper pet care and responsibility can impact generations to come on the proper treatment of our animal friends. Learn about some of the many ways to assist your local community by helping animals of all kinds.

2:30 PM: The Petfinder.com™ Adoptable Parade of Rescue Pets

Dr. Edward Wakem, Veterinarian, Ceva Animal Health

We’re all familiar with the mosquito’s annoying buzz, the painful itchy bite and the threat of disease. We are also familiar with what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. We love our dogs, too. What about them? Mosquitoes carry a disease that presents the worst threat to a dog’s health and well-being and that disease is heartworm. Learn about Double Defense with Vectra 3D, how protection starts with the mosquito and ends with a happier, healthier dog.

Racing across a grassy course with the wind in their face, free as a bird, and a “lure” just within reach? It doesn’t get much better than that, folks! Lure coursing is a sport for dogs (and even the occasional kitty!) which involves chasing an exciting mechanical “lure” that jerks, jumps, wiggles, and turns on a dime, much like those elusive squirrels and rabbits that somehow (luckily) always manage to get away. So any pet who enjoys an exciting game of “Chase,” regardless of age, ability, handicap, size, or skill, is welcome to give the Lure Course a try! The sport of lure coursing is rapidly increasing in popularity, and once you’ve taken a gander at this game in action, you’ll see exactly why. This is a very popular feature, so those whose pooch (or courageous cat) would love a chance to give it a go, should make their way right over to the course and sign up - All runs only $10.
